Coming soon: Nintendo Wii Video
Nintendo Wii Video service will coming soon. It seems that Nintendo wants to join the party of online video content. Nintendo plan on launching a video service in 2009 and will only air as “cartoons and entertainment content”, exclusive to the Nintendo service. Although has not been announced a pricing model, news report claim that Nintendo Wii Video offerings will be premium while others free but with ad supported.
It is no-doubt while Nintendo Wii gracing many millions more homes after the Holidays, but there is one easy criticism of the device; it?s lack of movie-playing options, unless you do some hacking that optical drive just won’t play your DVDs. Since the PlayStation and Xbox can already do this, and are quite successful with the digital distribution of content over their respective online services and also with the PS3 supporting Blu-ray, the Nintendo Wii video is lagging behind its competitors.
Apparently, Nintendo intends to develop original content for Nintendo wii video users to watch. This Video for Nintendo Wii is becoming a TV program or movie producer and erstwhile broadcaster? That bizarre choice will probably lead to enhanced advertising or short kid-centric game-themed or cartoon fare such as Pokemon, rather than full-blown programming. Movies and shows from other providers should be the lion-share of what is offered.

Nintendo Wii Video is the television nightmare
For the Japanese launch of the service, Dentsu Inc. are Nintendo’s partners and the two companies stated that “Nintendo and Dentsu shall use the environment surrounding the Nintendo Wii Video so that living rooms with Wii-ready TVs would become more of a fun area for communication among families and friends.” With some pay-to-view content, Nintendo Wii Play Videowill offer most shows for free. The service will go live in Japan first with a view to expand overseas in the future.
A number of the executives of Japanese television have expressed concern about the launch of the upcoming Nintendo?s Wii video channel. A senior executive from biggest commercial broadcaster Fuji Television Japan, according to The Times, described the Nintendo Wii Video channel as “the stuff of television producers’ nightmares”.
Another executive commented that with over 40 million Nintendo consoles having been sold worldwide, the Wii Videos is the “centre-piece of the living room”. The Wii video channel will feature exclusive content such as quizzes, cartoons, cookery programmes and other educational and lifestyle shows. It is due to launch in Japan during the spring, expected to follow later with a worldwide release in the next year.
